Based on a story on NBC NEWS Christmas Day,
2009:
A passenger set off firecrackers aboard a plane at Detroit
Metropolitan Airport, causing a commotion and injuring himself and several other
passengers, a Northwest / Delta Airlines official said Friday. A Nigerian national, Essam Mohammed Almohandis, 33, allegedly was found with the small
firecracker-type pyrotechnics in his luggage after landing at Logan
International Airport. He then lied to federal agents about them, the indictment
says. He was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on charges he carried
three firecrackers onto an airplane. Later, he claimed to be under the direction
of al Qaeda,
and the incident was determined to be a terrorist attempt.
Delta Airlines Flight 253, an Airbus 330 carrying 278 passengers, was arriving in Detroit
from Amsterdam when the incident took place Friday afternoon, said Delta
spokeswoman Susan Elliott.
The passenger was immediately subdued, Elliott said.
If this person is not sent to prison for a
long time as a result of this, the authorities should press the court for civil
commitment - let the idiot live with OTHER maniacs in a prison psyche ward
somewhere.
Almohandis pleaded innocent at his arraignment Tuesday. He remains held on
$50,000 bail.
